Maarja Pärtna is an Estonian writer, translator, and editor. She’s the author 
of six collections of poetry. Pärtna has studied English language and literature 
at the University of Tartu and defended her master's degree in comparative literature. 

Pärtna's writings address socio-ecological themes. Her poetry trilogy, comprising 
„Vivarium” (2019), „The Living City” (2022), and „On the Edge of Uprising” (2024), 
critically examines personal environmental and social experiences within the broader 
context of the climate and ecological crisis. Emerging from northeastern Estonia, 
a region dramatically transformed by industrial processes, Pärtna's work explores 
themes of collective trauma, urban nature, ecological devastation under the growth-
oriented economic system, as well as forms of resilience, collaboration, and care.
Alongside poetry, Pärtna continues to develop these topics in her essays. 
She herself has translated essays by Kathleen Jamie, Margaret Atwood, Edward Said, 
and Robert Macfarlane into Estonian.

Maarja Pärtna has been awarded The Cultural Endowment of Estonia's poetry award, 
the Gustav Suits Poetry Prize, the Juhan Liiv Poetry Prize, and the title 
of Tartu's Young Culture Bearer. In 2024, she was chosen as the City Writer of Tartu. 
Pärtna has also participated in international festivals, residencies, 
and UNESCO Cities of Literature collaborations in Estonia and abroad.
